Parachute Pavilion

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The primary feature of the project is a public passage through the new pavilion that extends the existing boardwalk and connects the different levels of the site: the ramp connects the parking lot level with the elevated boardwalk level and the public passage - underneath the roof - creates a new diagonal shortcut through the pavilion. Therefore the pavilion is designed as a cantilevering roof that frees the boardwalk level as much as possible.
The shape of the roof is mainly generated by two deformations and three cuts: the first deformation is the tapering of the roof towards the front that faces the beach. This deformation allows in combination with the two elliptical cut-outs of the terrace a visual connection to the ocean.
The second deformation is the pulling out of two cones, which connect the roof to the boardwalk level and emphasize the diagonal public passage through the pavilion. During this passage the stroller gets on the one hand views into the shop and into the restaurant and on the other hand views into the event- and exhibition space in the roof – a view through the elliptical shaped light cone in the middle of the passage.
