PROJECT DESCRIPTION
A New World Trade Center - FunnelCity
The project has two approaches. One is to create a system of funnels which are memorising the terrible disaster of the 11th Septembre by marking the former World Trade Center as negative courtyards. The second is to analyse the urban environment which is represented by fragmented green spaces, monofunctional office and retail agglomerations and to create a new urban megastructure which integrates the three elements of the area:
1. Extension of the Broadway to the riverside,
2. Completion of the office block across the site,
3. Extension of the riverside park to the Broadway, re-modeling the ground surface facing the Hudson River
the projects sugests different Living Quarters:
1.the Kasbah - housing with collective patios
2.Workstation - different types of office and work/live spaces
3.Suburbia - low rise housing zone
4.Nomadsland - big volume structure, high density work/live units
These components are interweaving into a horizontal urban megastructure which is distorted around the memorial funnels and deflected into verticality on the riverside edge – a new multilayered skyscraper.
The project is an inversion of the old destroyed city fabric, but also of the existing city by introducing a park-like landscape of event-, shopping and recreation spaces into a vertical city.
